Our ESG Commitment
We pride ourselves as a responsible business with a commitment to delivering worldclass convenience retail whilst improving the lives of others, and delivering a positive impact on society.
We are committed to:
- Regularly reviewing our ESG/sustainability impacts, risks and opportunities, considering both financial materiality and impact materiality.
- Ensuring we dedicate internal resource and expertise to manage ESG issues.
- Engaging with our colleagues on our ESG journey through communications and training.
- Complying with applicable ESG regulations across the market in which we operate.
- Regularly engaging with internal and external stakeholders on our ESG journey to ensure we align with both internal and external expectations.
- Conducting ESG and sustainability due diligence across our own operations and value chain.
- Setting targets and internal milestones to drive improvement across our most material ESG issues.
Our ESG Policy Position Statement sets out our Group wide aims and objectives to drive progress across the market in which we operate.
Our Environment Policy Position Statement
We seek to contribute to a more sustainable future and minimise our environmental impact.
This Policy Position Statement sets out our Group-wide aims and objectives on climate change (our most material environmental impact) and other environmental issues including water, biodiversity, pollution prevention, energy efficiency and waste.
Climate Change Mitigation
As a fuel convenience retailer, our most material environmental impact is climate change.
We aim to mitigate our impact on climate change by reducing our own carbon emissions and supporting the energy transition by scaling up electric vehicle charging and lower carbon fuels.
With the assistance of Carbon Trust, we will be setting Scope 1 and 2 Targets which will be published in our next external policy statement and/or Accounts.
We recognise that our most recent significant impact on climate change is generated from the fuel we sell in our petrol filling stations. We are working to scale up our product offering to enable the energy transition, including electric vehicle (EV) charging and lower carbon fuels. To reduce emissions across our value chain (Scope 3), we are committed to:
- Scaling up our offering on EV charging.
- Reviewing options to minimise the carbon footprint of our EV charging offered.
- Continuing to explore and expand our offering of lower carbon fuels, including renewable diesel and hydrogens.
- Collaborate with our suppliers and brand partners across Grocery and Merchandise, Foodservice and Fuel to drive carbon reductions across our value chain. We have developed ESG clauses for supplier contracts and consider green lease clauses in our leases on a case by case basis, which aim to ensure our suppliers and landlords take steps to reduce their own carbon footprint. We have also developed an ESG questionnaire for suppliers, which includes a section on climate change. See further details on (page 7).
- Reduce our reliance on fuel sales by continuing to diversify our business through our Grocery and Merchandise and Foodservice businesses streams.
We measure and externally report our greenhouse gas emissions across our own operations.
Water
We aim to minimise water consumption through water saving programmes that deliver both water and cost savings, including:
- Water efficiency initiatives such as water monitoring.
- Use of water efficient equipment for car washes, taps and toilets.
- Where feasible, the installation of rainwater harvesting on larger sites.
Biodiversity
We aim to enhance biodiversity and nature conservation across green spaces at our retail sites and head office through initiatives such as green roofs, nature-friendly landscaping and planting.
Pollution Prevention
We are committed to the highest standard of environment, health, and safety (EHS) on our sites to prevent fuel leaks or spills. We maintain strict controls and procedures on EHS to prevent pollution including:
- Monitoring fuel tanks continuously (24 hours a day) by an external global partner to measure potential variances or losses.
- Leak detection equipment on fuel tanks - each site has automatic tank gauges (to detect potential leaks, losses and water ingress), and overfill
protection devices (to detect high levels during the delivery of product).
- Training and the implementation of procedures to ensure safe transfer of stock on delivery.
- Emergency response procedures and escalation processes for any potential spill or leak.
We have detailed internal policies and procedures on EHS (including 'Emergency Environmental Response Procedures' and the 'in-store Emergency Response Plan') with further details on pollution prevention which are accessible to all our colleagues.
Energy Efficiency
We are committed to reducing carbon emissions through energy efficiency measures on our sites, including the use of more energy efficient lighting, heating, cooling and refrigeration equipment. We also aim to reduce the use of refrigerant gases that cause global warming.
Since January 2025, we have installed Energy Management System (EMS) equipment across multiple sites within our brands to monitor electricity usage. By capturing detailed consumption data and identifying peak demand periods, we are committed to developing a strategy that improves energy efficiency and ensures equipment is powered down when not in use. This includes trialling time-based adjustments to drinks fridge temperatures based on the time of day.
Renewable energy
We are committed to increasing our use of renewable energy including:
- Generating our own renewable electricity onsite via our solar panels. We are committed to installing solar panels on all new build PFS and Starbucks sites;
- Reviewing opportunities to implement Power Purchase Agreements enabling us to supply a portion of resources in renewable ways (e.g. solar farms); and
- Reviewing our supply contracts with the option of providing green energy.
Climate change adaption
We recognise that climate change may increase physical risk to our business from extreme weather events to rising temperatures. We seek to enhance our resilience to physical climate risks through our insurance cover, and our property maintenance and refurbishment programmes.
Waste
We seek to minimise resource use, reduce waste and increase recycling. We aim to manage our waste responsibly by:
- Minimising waste generated e.g. through effective stock management and efficient ordering.
- Increasing the proportion of waste which is segregated and sent for reuse or recycling.
- Ensuring hazardous waste is segregated and disposed of responsibly in line with local and national regulatory requirements.
Within our food retail operations, we seek to redistribute unsold food to ensure it doesn't go to waste, via commercial redistribution services or charity donations. This reduces both cost to our business and benefits local communities. Where it is not practicable to redistribute goods, our waste partners aim to increase recycling or reuse e.g. biogas/biofuel production or use as animal feed.
We recognise the damage that plastic waste can cause to the environment and aim to reduce use of virgin plastic packaging across our proprietary food brands - and seek to collaborate with suppliers and brand partners to encourage alternatives to single use plastics.
In addition, and as part of our ongoing commitment to responsible waste management and environmental preservation, we have introduced battery recycling initiative at our Head Office. This supports our goal to increase recycling rates and reduce hazardous waste.
Social Policy Position Statement
We seek to have a positive social impact in the communities we serve and across our supply chain. Our Policy Position Statement sets out our Group-wide aims and objectives on social issues including our people, community, supplier due diligence, human rights and modern slavery.
Our People - Colleague Wellbeing
We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to create a better future. That's why, on top of creating job opportunities, we also aim to provide an inclusive culture where all our colleagues can develop, progress and share in our success.
At EG On the Move, we want people to celebrate and value their differences. We aim to be a diverse, equitable and inclusive business, which reflects the diversity of our colleagues, customers, communities and the countries in which we operate.
We are committed to:
- Providing equal opportunities for everyone regardless of age, disability, gender identity, marital status, nationality, racial and ethnic origin, religion, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
- Creating a working environment in which all individuals can make the best use of their skills, free from discrimination or harassment and in which all decisions are based on merit.
- A zero-tolerance environment of abusive behaviour in any form including violence, harassment, discrimination, intimidation and abuse of position. Any allegation or complaint of abusive behaviour will be fully, and properly investigated and appropriate action taken.
- Attracting and retaining our colleagues through training and development
programmes and through fair reward and benefits.
- Promoting the highest standard of health, safety and security in the
workplace.
- Promoting personal wellbeing and positive mental health.
- Continue to carry out a colleague engagement survey and work with our colleagues to act on the findings.
We have internal policies covering a wide range of issues, from equality, diversity and inclusion, to health and safety and mental health, which are accessible to our colleagues.
We are also exploring an internal mentoring programme across the Group at both head office and site level to inspire personal growth, generate meaningful connections across our organisation, and support talent retention. We invest in the ongoing professional development of our colleagues, supporting upskilling, reskilling and career progression across the business. This includes access to apprenticeships, role-specific training, leadership development and commercially focused learning solutions that support both individual growth and organisational capability.
Community Engagement and Impact
We believe that where you start in life, shouldn't determine where you end up - that's why we aim to create a better future for our wider communities. We support disadvantaged, vulnerable communities, through health, education, and infrastructure to make a difference where it is needed most.
In the UK we invest in local communities though our corporate sponsorship of the EG Foundation, which was established in 2019 as an independent charity. The EG Foundation aims to create a 'brighter tomorrow' by supporting children and young people, health and wellbeing, and education.
We promote different fundraising activities across our business and encourage colleagues to volunteer for good causes, and we are looking to work with selected charity partners to raise funds.
Supplier Due Diligence
We seek to work with suppliers and brand partners that share our values and commitment to responsible business practices. We are committed to implementing and improving our supplier due diligence processes to manage ESG risks and drive improvement across our supply chain including:
- Incorporating ESG clauses into supplier contracts.
- Monitoring performance of key suppliers.
We have developed an ESG questionnaire for suppliers, which covers key sustainability issues including climate change, waste, water, biodiversity, pollution prevention, human rights, community, employees and business ethics. It also includes additional sector-specific questions for fuel suppliers (including questions on investment and revenue in renewable & low carbon products, methane emissions and biofuels) and food suppliers (including questions on sustainable sourcing, food waste, packaging, animal welfare and health eating & nutrition).
- Ethical audits for some higher-risk suppliers e.g. uniform suppliers.
Human Rights and Modern Slavery
We are committed to respecting and upholding human rights across our own operations and value chain (including suppliers, business partners, customers, communities, and other stakeholders).
We do not tolerate any form of modern slavery or any abuse of human rights within our business operations, supply chain, or any business partnerships, including forced labour, compulsory labour, child labour and human trafficking.
We seek to develop and implement due diligence processes to promote human rights and mitigate against the risk of modern slavery across our own operations and supply chain.
We are committed to the following due diligence across our own operations:
- Regularly review human rights and modern slavery risks associated with our business operations.
- Maintain HR processes to mitigate risks e.g. procedures to ensure that
employees have the right to work.
- Provide training for our colleagues on human rights and modern slavery risks.
- Maintain reporting and grievance procedures, including the operation of an independent whistleblowing hotline, to enable stakeholders (including
employees and workers in our supply chain, and customers) to report
concerns without the fear of recrimination.
-
Fully investigate alleged breaches of our standards and support the remediation of issues that may be found.
-
Ensure any incidents of modern slavery or human rights violations are dealt with in a sensitive way that protects the victims, in line with relevant local law or guidance such as the British Retail Consortium (BRC) Protocol for
Handling Reported Cases of Modern Slavery.
We are committed to the following due diligence across our supply chain:
- Regularly review human rights risks in our supply chain.
- Minimise human rights risk in our supply chain by working with trusted brand partners and suppliers that share our commitment to respect human rights.
- Our ESG clauses for supplier contracts, aim to ensure our suppliers:
- Respect human rights;
- Protest the fundamental rights of workers by complying with the
Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) Base Code; and
-
- Immediately report to EG On the Move any breach or suspected breach of the ETI Base Code across its own operations and supply chain. We also request high-risk suppliers to complete ethical audits (e.g. uniform suppliers).
- Our ESG questionnaire for suppliers (see Supplier Due Diligence section above) contains a section on human rights to assess supplier compliance with the ETI Base Code, human rights risks, details of human rights due diligence and regulatory compliance.
- We are developing a supplier Code of Conduct to ensure our suppliers are aware of the standards we expect in their supply chains.
- Fully investigate alleged breaches of our standards and support the
remediation of issues that may be found.
Governance
Our Annual Report details our approach to governance.
We are committed to the highest standards of business ethics and have developed a Group-wide Code of Conduct, which sets out the ethical standards we expect all our colleagues and everyone working with us to meet. It is a cornerstone of our commitment to integrity, respect, and excellence.
We have issued a 'Fraud Risk Prevention and Reporting Policy' alongside 'How to Prevent Fraud' training as the business has a zero-tolerance approach to fraud. We are dedicated to making fraud prevention and detection an integral part of how we do business. We are also finalising our 'Anti-Bribery Policy' and associated training module so colleagues understand their responsibilities and where to seek further information and support on any anti-bribery issues. We understand the importance of our colleagues undertaking this learning and this is why the ESG training module, along with other modules, are mandatory for all colleagues. The ESG Training Module covers (a) 'What ESG is'; (b) 'Why it Matters'; (c) 'What EG On the Move is doing on ESG'; and (d) 'how it affects colleagues'. It also details our sustainable development goals, financial stakeholders involvement, relevant government and regulators, and how to manage risk and opportunities. Completion of the ESG training forms part of our performance management framework and is reflected in relevant key performance indicators, including bonus metrics where applicable.
We adopt the Wates Principles of Corporate Governance and will be disclosing progress annually in our Annual Report.
